On May 30, 2016, the Harris County Sheriff's Office arrested 25-year-old Demontre Jones after they confiscated pills from him that they suspected were Alprazolam, an anti-anxiety medication.

On June 6, 2016, Jones pled guilty in Harris County Criminal District Court to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 30 days in the Harris County Jail.

On June 8, 2016, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences tested the pills and no controlled substances were detected. The lab notified the Harris County District Attorney's conviction integrity unit, which then informed Jones's defense attorney.

On June 13, 2016, the prosecution joined in a defense motion to vacate the conviction. The motion was granted and the prosecution dismissed the charge.
