On April 1, 2016, police in Pasadena, Texas arrested 27-year-old William Handy-Buford after they seized pills from him that they believed were Alprazolam, an anti-anxiety medication.
On April 6, 2016, Handy-Buford pled guilty in Harris County Criminal District Court to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to six days in the Harris County Jail.
On April 21, 2016, laboratory tests performed on the pills by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences were negative for any controlled substances.
The laboratory informed the Harris County District Attorney's conviction integrity unit, which thenwho in turn notified Handy-Buford's defense attorney and supported a motion to vacate the conviction.
On May 2, 2016, the conviction was vacated and the prosecution dismissed the charge.
